Alain Saint-Martin nous a quitté Jeudi matin à la suite d’une longue maladie. Il restera toujours pour moi la personne qui m’a permis de débuter réellement dans la vie professionnelle en m’embauchant à Carrefour en 96, puis en m’en débauchant en 99 !

Je n’ai jamais d’ailleurs pu m’empêcher de continuer à l’appeler (affectueusement) "Chef", et ce même plusieurs années après avoir travaillé avec lui pour la dernière fois.

Ne reste désormais plus que les nombreux souvenirs des bons moments passés ensemble, à Carrefour comme à la Fnac, aux 4 coins du monde (Hong-Kong, Taiwan, Lodz, Sao Paulo, …) comme en France.

Jovial, proche de ses équipes, humain, attachant, exigeant, grand professionel de la distribution, à l’aise aussi bien dans un entrepôt avec un cariste que dans l’ambiance feutrée d’un COMEX, il restera une référence pour moi comme pour la plupart des gens l’ayant cottoyé.

J’ai encore du mal à croire que ce numéro sur mon portable ne me servira plus,

The local newspapers have been buzzing with the news lately : Ikea is considering opening a new factory, and Dijon is one of the city willing to host it. I sincerely hope that we will got this deal, because we need it badly, and Dijon, along with Burgondy, have a lot of unique advantages for such a project …

- Location : Dijon is seated at an unique poition is the center of France and Europe*, with every means of transportation available : highways (A6/A31/36/A39), train with high speed lines bound to North, South and Eath, and even "green" fluvial transport through the "Canal de Bourgogne" !

- Wood lumbers : Dijon is located next to the Morvan, with high quality woods and an expertise unique in France regarding wood and its transformation (ApprovalBois is partnering with the city of Dijon to win the deal). In the Morvan wood used to be the main economical activity of the region with the floating of heating wood to Paris (the last float took place at the beginning of the 20th century). Since then, the Morvan forests have been largely underused and lately, wood transformation and added value operations related ot it, has been identified as a key development for the next years in Morvan. And if the Morvan timbers are not enough, you can be sure that nearby Jura will be ready to satisfy the factory needs

- Workforce : By seating its factory in Dijon, Ikea is sure to get a professional, skilled and motivated workforce. What’s more to be said ?

I’m pretty sure that the local autorities, working on the candidature of Dijon, will explain and showcase these points to Ikea management team. Let’s hope that they will succeed bringing to the center of Burgundy this unique opportunity of development.

* : By the way, do you know that the center of the Euro zone happen to be in Mhere in the Nièvre department, 100 Kms West of Dijon ? It used to be in Montreuillon (nice place to fish), but was somehow shifted to the East 2 years ago with the last countries entering the Euro zone.

Début d’année difficile pour les quelques optimistes (il y en avaient réellement ?) suffisament crédules pour croire le discours rassurant des autorités financières de la planète. Aujourd’hui, sans raison particulière, les marchés financiers ont dévissé, à commencer par l’Asie, rapidement suivie par l’Europe. Le CAC 40 perd ainsi près de 12 % sur 5 jours, soit près de 100 Mds (milliards) d’Euros de valorisation boursière partis en fumée.

Le pire reste à venir car les réactions des investisseurs deviennent irrationnelles et les fonds profitent à fond du système, quitte à provoquer la baisse.

Seule bonne nouvelle : pour les investisseurs ayant des liquidités à investir, les bonnes affaires vont être pléthore sur le marché. De mon coté, j’espère seulement un impact positif (lire une baisse) sur l’immobilier … A suivre

Up to now, you have to rely only on your memory (or paper) for the subject and the place, your digital camera taking care of "when" by embedding automatically this information in your pictures.

With the commodization of GPS devices, we should have already have seen GPS integration into mainstream digital camera, or at least support for Bluetooth connexion. However, none of the manufacturers took the jump, and out of high range digital reflex where a pricey GPS is available, there is no simple way to embed location information in your picture EXIF datas

There enters ATP, an US memory maker, who launched during the last CES a device aimed to be the "world most easy to use geotagging device". The "ATP Photo Finder " is a portable GPS unit which records your whereabouts during your shootings. By the end of the day, remove your memory card from your camera, and plug it into the ATP Photo Finder (it features a build in card reader). The ATP Photo Finder will then automatically embed location information in your pictures using EXIF information and recorded track (make sure that your camera and the ATP device are time synchonized !).

When you import your pictures on your computer, you will now have location information, as well as date/time and shooting parameters !

I use to do this using my PDA GPS with OziExplorer to record the track, and matching tracking data with the pictures on my PC, but I have to say that this solution is far more elegant and simple to use ! I hope the product will be quickly wildly availble to get my hands on it as soon as possible.

PS : Don’t forget to check the clock of your camera everyday you use it. Importing a batch of many tens of pictures just to find them dated in 2005 may be annoying and it happened to me many times … But thanks to Photoshop Elements date/time functions, you have the ability to shift the date of your pictures back to the right date !

PS : J’espère qu’IGN me pardonnera cette utilisation abusive d’une image de carte de la série bleue au 25 000, images qui sont malheureusement non libre de droit d’utilisation (contrairement à ce qui peut se passer dans certains pays étrangers), ce qui est un comble pour un établissement public …

C’est aujourd’hui 15 Janvier, qu’Office 2008 (la version Mac de la suite Office de Microsoft) est officiellement disponible à la vente. Mais en cherchant sur le Web, on se rend rapidement compte que si des sites comme Surcouf et Amazon proposent le produit en pré-commande, personne ne semble être au courant à Fnac Direct du lancement mondial de cette suite bureautique. Ainsi une recherche sur "office 2008", similaire à celle menée sur Surcouf et Amazon, renvoie plusieurs catégories de produits et aucun produit correspondant à Office 2008 (à noter à cette occasion qu’Office 2007 Edition familiale apparait à la rubrique "Jeux vidéos"), le produit ne semblant tout simplement pas référencé ! Une visite de la catégorie "Macintosh" de l’onglet "Logiciels" permet de constater la mise en avant (à gauche dans les dossiers) d’Office 2007 … Dommage.
